Brixton Town Centre - Pirates of Coldharbour

Still from The Pirates of ColdharbourOne of the aims of the Brixton Town Centre Team is to offer young people opportunities to participate in projects which promote their development in a number of areas.

These projects help young people learn new skills, raise self-confidence, gain a sense of achievementĀ  and identify needs and issues relevant to young people living in Brixton.

The Pirates of Coldharbour is a film which was written and performed by young people from Brixton. Using a professional director and cameraman the project worked over six months with 40 young people, starting initially with script writing and acting workshops in order to develop the storyline.

The film was released late last year with its premier screening at the Ritzy Cinema. It generated a large amount of media interest and was covered by press and television. The film is a comedy crime caper shot entirely in Brixton. It follows the disasterous attempts of a group of young people who are forced by debt to undertake a robbery.

The film has also received a great deal of interest in France, and as a consequence we are currently working with a youth organisation in Paris to develop a joint film project looking at identity and culture inĀ Paris and London.
