Brixton Town Centre- Community Safety
There are two Community Safety Officers covering Brixton Town Centre. They are Rachel Gailey, who covers Brixton Town Centre, Coldharbour Ward, Coldharbour Lane and part of Herne Hill; and Kate Newham, who covers Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, Brixton Hill and Ferndale Wards. They are based within Lambeth's Community Safety Team.
The Community Safety Team aims to make Lambeth a safer place to live, work, travel and visit by working with the police and other local agencies.
Crime is down in Lambeth overall, but concern about crime remains high. We are trying to tackle the concerns that you have identified to us as your priorities. These include drug dealing and drug misuse in residential areas, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle crime. Details of how we are doing this can be found in our Three Year Community Safety Strategy, which also gives more information regarding the work of the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.
Locally, the partnership is focussing on Brixton Town Centre and have recently relaunched Operation Refresh to try and tackle crime and disorder issues there. We have undertaken a number of environmental improvements to 'design out crime' and are now concentrating on drug crime issues, together with alcohol related crime, helping to rehouse rough sleepers with the help of St Mungos and working more closely with Brixton businesses.
Coldharbour, Ferndale and Herne Hill wards have all recently become Safer Neighbourhoods. This means they have a team of police dedicated to them. Each team consists of one police Sergeant, two pcs and three police Community Support Officers. Community Panels have been put in place for residents to find out more and help set the teams' priorities.
If you would like more information on the Community Panel or other crime and community safety issues please contact Rachel on 020 7926 1032 or Kate on 020 7926 1033.
