New local structures

From September 2008, the town centre management arrangements introduced in 1999 will change as the Council introduces new local structures. These will include a new Communities and Neighbourhoods Team, part of the restructured Regeneration and Enterprise Division, and the Active Communities Team, led by John Kerridge, which will move to the Adult and Community Services Department.

We would like to thank residents, community activists, voluntary and community groups who have supported, challenged and collaborated with the town centre teams and other council departments for the social, economic and environmental improvement of their different areas over the past nine years.

The many successes across the borough are due to your local knowledge, skills and commitment. There are too many to mention all of them here, but include:

  • support to a large number of voluntary and community groups in North Lambeth (and throughout the borough)
  • an outreach service to older people in North Lambeth to promote attendance allowance, raising weekly income levels for all successful claimants,
  • developing estate-based youth work
  • partnership activity leading, e.g. to £1,000,000 of improvements to Wandsworth Road and improvements to Streatham High Road
  • the creation and development of the Streatham Festival
  • restoring the Old Library back to community use in Norwood
  • innovative work with young people in Brixton
  • a range of environmental and community safety projects delivered under the Area Committees' capital programmes across the Borough.

In addition, there has been extensive work with the borough’s diverse local communities, including the Muslim Community and the Portuguese community, as well as a range of events linked to Peace Month, securing a volunteer centre for the borough (due to open in March 2009), help with securing assets for the National Black Heritage Centre in Brixton and an elderly people and carers’ Hub in Streatham.

Neighbourhoods and Communities Team

Three Neighbourhoods and Communities teams work in the North, South and Centre of the borough to engage with local residents, voluntary organisations and community groups in support of the council’s regeneration and neighbourhood programmes, as well as broader neighbourhood working issues.
