This page details the latest updates on projects and improvements being undertaken or planned in the North Lambeth area, as well as giving details of successful improvement projects already undertaken.

Projects

Myatts Field North estate redevelopment

A major redevelopment of the Myatts Field North estate is taking place which is being funding through the Private finance Initiative (PFI). This will include the demolition of properties in the worst condition to be replaced with new build and at the same time reconfigure the estate to provide open usable space for the wider community. Find out more about this project.

Leake Street

The walls of Leake Street have been deep cleaned, tiled and rendered. Pavements and surfaces were treated in such a way as to make future maintenance easy by use of paint and special coatings. This work complimented investments by Eurostar in upgrading lights, and planned pigeon proofing works by Eurostar and Railtrack. The work brought the existing tunnel to a standard that is clean and safe, more sustainable, and acceptable to the public.

Heart of Waterloo (HoW)

The HoW is the name of the project that covers Emma Con Gardens, Lower Marsh entrance (piazza) and Millennium Gardens.

The partnership includes Circle Waterloo, LBL, TFL, The Waterloo Community Development Group and the Waterloo Green Trust amongst others.

All the plans for the project have been drawn up and a process of consultation is underway with the community, once the plans have been finalised they will be submitted to statuary authorities.

It is envisaged that work on the entrance to Lower Marsh Piazza will be the first phase of the development.

Graffiti removal

Surfaces throughout the shopping centre have been covered in graffiti. Waterloo Quarter Business Alliance, formerly Circle Waterloo, have co-ordinated and part funded a wholesale removal of these graffiti. This was undertaken in partnership with Lambeth Council's Grimebusters Unit.

Millennium Green

The project was designed to complete the integrated community park, play and youth project at Millennium Green, on the corner of Baylis Road and Waterloo Road. The changes have transformed the area and created an amenity for local residents and workers.

SE1 United

SE1 United is a new youth organisation composed of articulate young people from Waterloo who want to give a voice and positive image to their age group, an ever-growing section of the community.

Waterloo Time Bank

Waterloo Time Bank is a new community project run by St John's Church. The premise is about neighbours helping neighbours and its currency is time, not money. For every hour spent helping someone, such as performing practical tasks, befriending someone, running errands, you are entitled to an hour's help in return.

Multi Ethnic Counselling service provides first language counselling to local ethnic minority communities. Many refugees have harrowing histories and need to deal with this before they can be helped into appropriate training and employment.

Your Story

This project uses sport as a foundation for a more formal programme of educational and vocational skills. The project is based at the ADI Centre on Lambeth Road.

Stamford Street Neighbourhood Centre

Coin Street Community Builders are planning to build the Stamford Street Neighbourhood Centre on the northwest corner of Stamford Street and Coin Street. Included will be a community café facing the rear garden as well as a shop or restaurant fronting the street.

There will be a learning and enterprise centre offering training and advice to individuals and small businesses and a family and children's centre run by Coram Family. The latter will accommodate a pre-school breakfast club and after-school club, youth activities, holiday play schemes and parent and family support.
