UK households throw away around 8.3 million tonnes of food every year. We can all make a BIG Difference to the environment and save money by cutting our food waste. Here are a few simple ways to do this:
- plan your meals in advance to reduce the likelihood of food waste
- make a shopping list and take it with you to the supermarket so you only buy what you need
- keep an eye on the use by dates of the food in your fridge and freeze anything that you don't think you will use in time
- keep a well-stocked freezer and store cupboard so you always have something on hand to turn your leftovers into a feast.
Some food waste, such as vegetable peelings and tea bags, are unavoidable. Why not turn this into something useful and start home composting? We have also started collecting food waste in some areas. Find out if your home is included.
