Bishop's ward

Bishop's ward is bounded to the north and west by the Thames, and reaches as far south as Lambeth Bridge. The southern boundary is Old Paradise Street and Fitzalan Street in the Lambeth Walk area, as far as the Culpepper Court estate.

The Imperial War Museum is just outside the Eastern boundary of A23 Kennington Road. The ward reaches as far as the Wellington Mills estate, and is bounded to the east by King Edward Walk, Morley Street, and Hatfields. The eastern edge of the waterfront is between the National Theatre and the Coin Street complex.

  • Bishop's ward has the smallest population in the borough. It rose from 6,795 in 1991 to 9,194, an increase of 35.3%. This is 3.5% of the borough population. Bishop's has an area of 153.9 hectares (5.7% of the borough). For the local elections in 2002, there were 6,857 electors.
  • Compared to the borough Bishop's has had larger reduction (11.2%) in its white population and increase (6.8%) in its Black population since the 1991 Census. Other groups including Chinese have also reduced in this time.
  • It is the ward with the highest percentage of 15-19 year olds and least in older age ranges, and thus it has a low economic activity, as there are a high number of students in the ward.
  • Whilst it has a small population, the ward does have high rates of people in poor health.
  • 3.1% of the ward's households are Lone Parent Households with dependent children a low figfure for the borough. Bishop's has the highest proportion of all-student households, 1.0% of ward households and 10.5% of all all-student households.
