Leader of the Council
Welcome to Lambeth Council from the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council
Cllr Steve Reed has been Leader of Lambeth Council since the local elections of May 2006, following which Labour formed the majority group on Lambeth Council.
The Leader is the most senior councillor on the council who leads decision making and directs strategic policy.
The Cabinet consists of senior councillors who determine the council's strategic direction and policy for particular departments.
The Leader of the Council chairs meetings of the Cabinet where decisions about council policy are made. The Leader of the Council, along with the Chief Executive, is also a central figure in the council's relationship with central government and various partners in the private and public sector.
Cllr Steve Reed is supported in his role by the Deputy Leader of the Council, Cllr Jackie Meldrum, who acts as Vice-Chair of the Cabinet and often deputises for Steve Reed at meetings he is not able to attend.

A message from the Leader
Lambeth is one of the most exciting places on earth to live, work or visit. With people from all over the world living together here, we're one of the most diverse places in Europe – and we're proud of that!
In May 2006 Lambeth's residents voted for a new council with a clear agenda to make Lambeth safer and improve the local services that people rely on. The newly elected Labour administration's priority is "delivering quality, tackling inequality" and is committed to Lambeth being a council that residents really feel is on their side. With huge variations in life chances across Lambeth's population, it's important the council does what it can to ensure every resident has the best possible chance for success and happiness in their life.
Lambeth provides an extraordinary range of services; in fact you'll find details of over a hundred different services on this website. Many of our services are already excellent, but residents know as well as I do where there needs to be further improvement. It's important that Lambeth starts to deliver high quality services that represent excellent value for money right across the board. I know the council can achieve this. We have the ambition and the capacity to improve, but only if we keep listening to ordinary people's needs and then act on what we hear. That's the challenge I've set the council – to become an excellent local authority that Lambeth's residents can be proud of. It's a bold challenge, but its one I'm confident we can achieve.
If you have any comments on council services or would like to make suggestions about how we can make Lambeth a better place to live, please send me an email: sreed@lambeth.gov.uk
