Clapham Old Town
We are planning to improve Clapham Old Town area (previously know as Clapham Gateway project) for local people, businesses and visitors by:
- challenging the current use of space
- creating better connected areas
- ensuring accessibility for the greatest number of people
- maximising environmental and road safety benefits
- reducing the dominance of traffic
- improving pedestrian and cycle access
- looking at bus standing facilities.
We received a number of representations during the statutory consultation period which have now been considered and, based on the overwhelming support for the scheme during the major public consultation last year, a decision has been made to proceed with the elements of the scheme which form part of the statutory process.
Work on elements of the scheme which are not part of the statutory process - such as footway widening - have commenced on the west side of Old Town between Lydon Road and Orlando Road. Our contractors, FM Conway, will also be working in the central part of the Old Town ‘triangle’ and Old Town east side shortly. These works will enable us to introduce two-way working for general traffic on Old Town west side from August 2013.
Because of this there will be temporary changes to some local bus services. From 8 July 2013 please note the following temporary bus stop changes:
Routes 322 and 249 to alight passengers at Stop W on Clapham Common North Side.
Route 249 to stand outside George West House on Clapham Common North Side.
Routes 322, 417 and 88 to stand on the section of The Pavement that runs from Clapham Common North Side in front of The Polygon. The stands will be for boarding and alighting for Routes 88 and 417 and boarding only for Route 322.
There will be a reduction in the waiting and loading facilities on The Pavement whilst these works take place. However, we will be providing additional parking bays in Orlando Road and Grafton Square.
Once this phase has been completed in January 2014, there will be further changes when routes 88 and 417 will resume permanent standing in the Old Town ‘triangle’, prior to the scheme being fully completed in the spring of 2014. We will update you when these have been confirmed with TfL and bus operators.
In line with our intention to deliver first class customer services, we are working in partnership with our contractors FM Conway, to provide a mobile communication unit on site. The unit will display plans of all the COTRP proposals and officers will be available to answer any questions you may have. This will be located close to the Old Town Bus Stand and will be on site on Thursday 18 July between 5 and 8pm and Saturday 20 July between 11am and 4pm.
The full design scheme can be seen here.

Transport for London have also made available some additional Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme (NEP) funding to enable us to make wider improvements to Clapham Town and we are inviting you to let us know what you would like us to do. Look out for NEP posters and postcards or send us your comments via our NEP webpage.
