Streatham town centre

Streatham is the borough's most southerly town centre and contains the wards of St Leonard's, Streatham Hill, Streatham South and Streatham Wells.

The population of Streatham rose from 45,311 in 1991 to 51,769 in 2001, an increase of 14.3 %. This is 19.4% of the borough population. Streatham has an area of 586.6 hectares (21.5% of the borough). For the local elections in May 2002, there were 37,899 electors.

Streatham has the lowest proportion of children in lone parent families of all the town centres in Lambeth.

There is a high proportion of overcrowded private-rented one-person non-pensioner households in all Streatham wards and there is a low proportion of overcrowded council rented households in all wards, and St Leonard's has the highest proportion of overcrowded private rented households.

There was a fairly large increase in private renting in all wards in Streatham, with substantial decreases in owner occupation in St Leonard's and Streatham South.

Streatham has fewer housing estates than the other Town Centres but a large number of street properties owned by the council. Crime, while much lower than the centre and north of Lambeth is still at a worrying level, including drug related and violent crimes. The A23 is seen to bissect the area and certainly makes shopping, walking and cycling less attractive than it should be.

Despite its problems, there is much that is great about Streatham: the High Road is improving with new and established businesses investing in the area. Streatham people come from a wide range of backgrounds, both in terms of class and race and most people cite the multiracial nature of the area as a big plus.

There are strong faith communities, with two Mosques, numerous Churches of all denomination, a Hindu Temple and two synagogues and the faith communities' work well together.
