Be Safe, Be Seen this Winter

Children's TV favourite Angelica Bell joined primary school children on Monday 31 October for the handover of nearly 3,000 high visibility jackets to reception class children in Lambeth.

Monday was the first day back at school for children across the borough after the clocks go back. It is a time of year where children are particularly at risk due to the darker evenings.

The CBBC presenter and co-host of BBC 1's Departure Lounge will joined children from Tulse Hill's Jubilee Primary School for the launch of a scheme aimed at further reducing the number of children killed or seriously injured in road accidents.

Last year saw 66 children injured in road accidents in Lambeth, 14 of them seriously. London-wide 304 child pedestrians were killed or seriously injured.

The Government's Casualty Reduction target is for a 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured by 2010, compared to the 1994-8 average. And while Lambeth has already achieved a 58% reduction, it hopes to improve that figure yet further with the help of the high visibility road safety campaign.

The 3,000 reflective jackets are funded by `Lambeth First’ through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The road safety scheme also supports the Government's `Be Safe, Be Seen' campaign.
