Clapham Common Bandstand shines again
The historic Clapham Common Bandstand has been renovated to its former glory and will provide a vibrant focal point on Clapham Common for all to enjoy.
The Bandstand is the oldest and largest surviving bandstand in Greater London – and one of the finest in England. The restoration project raised £1.1million from funding granted by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the London Borough of Lambeth and the Heritage of London Trust. It has been supported by a major fundraising effort from the Clapham Society and the Friends of Clapham Common. The bandstand also received sponsorship from Ben & Jerry’s for the restoration project and funding of the deckchairs that will be used throughout the coming seasons.
Meticulous research by the design team from Dannatt Johnson and the skill of the main works contractor Killby & Gayford has delivered a Bandstand true to its original glory of 1890.
Restoration works included removing and repairing the roof, exposing and repairing the drum structure, strengthening the support pillars, and replacing and improving the drainage system. The zinc work for the roof has been manufactured in France and the iron balustrade has come from even further a field - India.
A community launch - organised by Lambeth Council will take place on Sunday 18th June. There will be fun and entertainment including live music, children’s musical workshops and face painting. The following weekend will see two charity events for the Bipolar Society, followed by a season of community events.
