Have your say on plans for Cross River Tram

Trams are to return to the streets of Lambeth for the first time in more than 60 years, and people in Lambeth are being urged to make sure they have their say as a major consultation is launched on possible route options.

Lambeth Council is working with the Cross River PartnershipTransport for London and other London boroughs to bring trams back to Lambeth and South London.

The Cross River Tram is the first new tram system proposed for inner London and could run from Camden and Kings Cross in the north, through Euston, Holborn and Waterloo then branch off to Brixton via the Oval and Peckham via Elephant and Castle.

A major consultation exercised is being launched this month, and residents, businesses and visitors are being asked to give their views on the proposed route options.

In Lambeth the tram will run from Waterloo to the Oval and then to Brixton.

Between Waterloo and Oval there are two route options for consultation.

  • Option 1 is for a route via Elephant and Castle using Kennington Park Road.
  • Option 2 is via Lambeth North and Kennington Road.

From the Oval to Brixton there are two route options for consultation.

  • Option 1 is via Stockwell using Clapham Road and Stockwell Road.
  • Option 2 uses the A23 Brixton Road.

In Brixton town centre there are two options for the terminus.

  • Option 1 is a terminus at the southern end of the town centre using a loop around St Matthew’s Church
  • Option 2 is a terminus in Pope’s Road, beside the Brixton Recreation Centre.

Exhibitions are being held on the following dates in Lambeth where residents can learn more, and pick up a questionnaire:

  • November 24, 2pm-7pm and November 25, 10am-4pm
    National Theatre, Cottesloe Square
  • December 8, 2pm-7pm and December 9, 10am-4pm
    Tate Gardens, Brixton.

Cllr Nigel Haselden said, Lambeth Council's Deputy Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "It's really important that as many people as possible have their say on the route, so I would encourage people to visit the exhibitions where they can, pick up brochures or to visit the TfL website, and put forward their views."

The tram will link four major rail terminals and 11 different tube lines. A typical journey from Brixton to Holborn would take just 22 minutes with trams departing every four minutes between Brixton and Waterloo and every two minutes between Waterloo and Euston.

Following on from this current route options consultation the preferred route will be set by TfL, and then detailed design of the tram alignment and stops will commence. A further round of consultation will occur later in 2007, based on the proposed detailed design of the preferred route alignment.
