Swim and play tennis free in Lambeth

Young people aged 16 and under and those aged 60 and over are now able to swim free in Lambeth's pools. The Swim Free scheme lasts for two years and is part of a government initiative to get us all more fit and active ahead of the 2012 Olympics. The scheme operates at Brixton Recreation Centre, Clapham Leisure Centre and Streatham Leisure Centre. In Lambeth, as an added incentive to encourage more physical activity, we are including free tennis for both age groups.
The scheme is very easy to join. For those with leisure centre membership already, they can begin swimming and playing tennis immediately.
Others without a current membership should pick up an application form from one of the centres, or you can download an application form.
As part of the scheme, the council has been successful in its bid for £350,000 from DCMS to improve the changing facilities at Brixton Recreation Centre. One planned improvement will be direct access to the pool for families with small children. At present children must be lead through the single sex area after leaving the family change area.
Plans of the proposed improvements will be on view at Brixton Recreation Centre after the Easter break. It is anticipated that work can begin in October 2009 and completed in January 2010.
