New life for an old Lambeth walk

20 December 2005

Wellfield Walk has been given a facelift thanks to a £25,000 cash injection from the Lambeth Opportunity Fund. The fund was provided by Lambeth Council for specific local improvement projects in 2005.

Wellfield Walk, which runs between Valley Road and Springwell Road in Streatham, is a major access route to the Streatham Garden Village, which comprises some 50-60 houses. The footpath had fallen into disrepair, with an uneven surface, overgrown plants and collapsed fencing.

Repair work to Wellfield Walk has also been an act of preserving local history. The Streatham Garden Village was originally a housing development for the workers employed by United Dairies, which later merged with Cow and Gate to form Unigate Dairies - still operating out of Valley Road today.

The improvement works have included clearing and resurfacing the path and repairing fencing. The results will benefit all those who use Wellfield Walk.

Mrs Salmon, Valley Rd resident says; “As a local resident and parent, the improvements to Valley Road footpath make it much easier to use with a pushchair”.

Alison Moller, head teacher of Julian primary school comments; “We are delighted that the Wellfield Path has been upgraded and the lighting improved. Residents are pleased that graffiti is now regularly removed and there have not been further occurrences.

“The staff and children have said that the path is now less slippery and brighter. This has made it much safer for everyone.”

Cllr. Andrew Sawdon, executive member for regeneration said; “These works illustrate what a huge difference a relatively small project can make. I hope that Wellfield Walk will continue to be a well-trodden access route to this historically interesting area for a long time to come.”
