Work to new Streatham Common Station entrance begins
Work is beginning this week (11 December) to rebuild and reopen a disused entrance at Streatham Common train station, and Lambeth Council wants to hear suggestions for themes for the station’s new mural.
The Eardley Road entrance was closed for safety reasons over 15 years ago and became an eyesore for local residents.
But following agreement over funding and the granting of planning permission, work is starting this week to rebuild the entrance.
As well as improving the appearance of the area, the £600,000 scheme will also mean some commuters will face a shorter walk in the morning, providing easier access for up to 7,000 people a day.
The work is being funded by Lambeth Council, Transport for London and Network Rail.
Lambeth Council wants to hear from commuters and residents their ideas for themes or designs for the feature wall mural on the corner of Greyhound Lane and the new entrance.

The council’s contractors will be undertaking minor preparatory work in December, with the major work starting in January. It is expected that the new entrance should be open by April 2007.
Cllr Nigel Haselden, Lambeth Council’s deputy cabinet member for transport, said:
“This new entrance will make it much easier for commuters coming from the Streatham Vale side to access the station, cutting their journey times by several minutes. The existing entrance can also get quite busy and this will help ease pedestrian congestion at peak times.”
“The disused entrance was also a real eyesore, so I’m delighted this scheme is getting off the ground.”
Colin Mann, TfL Head of Borough Programmes, said: ''This project will be a great benefit for all users of Streatham Common station. The re-opening of Eardley Road entrance will include measures to make the area safer and more attractive as well as more accessible for commuters.''
Lambeth Council and the contractor have reached agreement with Southern Railways to use Platform 4 for storage and site cabins.
Some part-time lane and footway closures along the railway side of Eardley Rd will need to occur for up to 1 hour a day in order to deliver materials, however these will be done outside of peak traffic hours and removed when not in use.
No changes to on-street parking are expected. Any construction-related questions or problems can be reported directly to Nuttall’s 24 hour hotline on freephone 0800 389 5901.
