Council leader visits school for Christmas lunch

19 December 2006

Lambeth Council Leader Steve Reed popped in to Glenbrook Primary School in Clapham to join the children for Christmas lunch.

The aim of the lunch was to give Councillor Reed the chance to speak directly to children about what they think of school, and also about their views on school dinners.

Among the topics of discussion was the school council’s recent review of school dinners which gave pupils a greater say in the school meal menus.

Cllr Reed said: “It was really good to get the chance to sit down and enjoy a meal with the children. The food is certainly a lot better than when I was at school.

“It was also useful for me to find out what they think about their meals. As council leader I am often reading reports about the percentage of children who are eating the healthy meals here, but that is no substitute for being able to come here and see for myself how much they are enjoying the meals.

Ten-year-old Daniela Cardoso, who is a member of school council, said: “We did some food testing a few months ago to find out what we liked and then we got it put on the menu. I do like junk food like chips and cakes but I also like vegetables because it is important to eat healthily. We now have fruit everyday and only have chips as a treat every now and then.”
