Respect programme

Lambeth received special area status with Respect giving us an exciting opportunity to change the lives of individuals and benefit the community as a whole around them. The Respect drive is a cross-Government strategy aimed at helping to create a modern culture of respect by addressing behavioural issues in the community.

As part of this Lambeth have joined work with the respect Task Force to delivered programmes to combat Anti social behaviour. This includes the introduction of a Family Intervention Project (FIP) that challenges and changes the behaviour of the most problematic households perpetrating anti-social behaviour. This parenting programme for identified families, allows an opportunity for development of life skills, sharing of experiences and coaching to encourage a change in behaviour and therefore an improvement of community living.

No Cold Calling Zone

The month of April saw the launch of a No Cold Calling Zone in the Thurlow Park Ward. A No Cold Calling Zone (NCCZ) is a designated area in which Door-to-door salespeople and other unsolicited visits are actively discouraged and callers reported to Trading Standards or the Police. The Zones are marked with clear signage and acts as means to protect the elderly or otherwise vulnerable people are targeted by rogue traders who calculatedly steal thousands of pounds from these individuals or become victims of distraction burglaries.

The scheme which covers six roads in the ward Tulsmere, Hexam, Lavengro, Dalmore, Eastmearn and Towton Roads has been in discussion with the local community, since late last year, who welcome this move.

Removal of phone boxes

The issue of telephone boxes misuse on and near Brixton Road – especially near the Tube Station has been a problem for a number of years. These phone boxes have sometimes been considered to be generators of crime by local police as they have often been used by drug dealers and drug users who use/abuse the phones.

Safer Lambeth Partnership, Transport for London and Spectrum Interactive, the phone providers of a number of telephone boxes in Brixton, have agreed to remove one of the boxes from Tunstall Road, and to relocate another marking the beginning of improvements to the area

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) team, launch of new team

Five ASB Caseworkers have been recruited to tackle ASB in Lambeth. ASB is unacceptable behaviour and selfish actions which affects the quality of community life. It also can result in an increase in the fear of crime. The caseworkers will cover geographical areas, known as sub-commands, for North, Central and South Lambeth.

Along with the launch of this team will be a 24-hour confidential hotline, available for members of the public to report anti-social behaviour without fear. A new database will also be devised to record and track the progress of ASB cases.
