Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE)

The LIFE scheme is a five day, intensive fire fighting and fire safety course, delivered by Lambeth Council in partnership with the London Fire Brigade. It aims to engage with young people between the ages of 13 and 19 who are involved, or at risk of becoming involved, in antisocial behaviour and those who have been victims of crime.

Based at Clapham Fire Station, participants are encouraged to work as part of a team, develop leadership skills, confidence and a responsible attitude. They are given personal responsibility for the management and maintenance of the fire engine, fire fighting equipment, the fire station and their own personal protective equipment. Structured team based activities, including learning how to use breathing apparatus, hoses and ladders and skills such as first aid are taught by regular fire fighters who have volunteered their time. Each course culminates in a ‘passing out’ ceremony where the young people can demonstrate their new skills for friends and family.

For further information or to make a referral to the programme, please complete and return a referral form and a parental consent form with as much detail as possible and return to life@lambeth.gov.uk or contact Ross Neal, LIFE Team Leader on 07717 157 861 or email ross.neal@london-fire.gov.uk
