Brixton Markets

Brixton is famous for its outdoor and indoor markets.

At the heart of the street market is Electric Avenue, one of the first electrically lit streets in London. It's location right next to the Brixton Tube and on many major bus routes, makes the market ideally located for those wishing to visit from further afield.

Pope's Road and Brixton Station Road are the other two street market areas. The unparalleled range of goods available reflects the diversity of those that live and work in Brixton. Many shoppers are attracted to the markets knowing that they will be able to find specialist food and other items that are difficult to source elsewhere. The outdoor market is open Monday to Saturday, with a half day on Wednesday.

Brixton Market conference

Recently, the Brixton Town Centre Office has been working with the Brixton Market Traders Federation, Lambeth Environment and the Brixton Markets Steering Group to tackle issues facing the market. A result of this work was the first Brixton Market Conference on 13 April 2005.

The conference succeeded in getting some 30 traders to discuss the most pressing issues facing the market including those of crime and community safety, the trading environment and involvement in the market management process. The conference was addressed by senior-level Lambeth councillors, officers and traders who expressed their support and hopes for a thriving long-term future for the market.

It is anticipated that a further conference will be held later in the year to inform and update on the progress of regeneration for Brixton market.
