Brixton people

Crowds outside Brixton tube stationPeople in Brixton come together in many ways to participate in their local community. From the Brixton Pound to Black Cultural Archives and the Green Man Skills Zone.

Black Cultural Archives

We have worked closely with Black Cultural Archives, a long-standing Brixton-based organisation to realise their aspirations to develop Raleigh Hall on Windrush Square as a centre for black people's heritage and culture of national reach.

Transition Town Brixton

Transition Town Brixton follows the example of similar schemes across the UK which aim to reduce our dependancy on oil and make the transition to a low carbon future. Find out more at the Transition Town Brixton website.

The Brixton Pound

In 2009 the Brixton Pound became the first urban complementary currency in the UK. One B£ = £1. The B£ is designed to support the local economy by keeping money circulating in the local area.

It is the first local currency in an urban area and the fourth to have its own currency, following the Totnes Pound in Devon, the Lewes Pound in Sussex and the Stroud Pound in Gloucestershire.

This community-led project is proof of the difference local people can makewhen they come together to make change happen. The council fully supports the project and provided funding for the Brixton Pound banknotes to be printed.

The Brixton Town Centre Director, Steph Butcher said, "Lambeth Council is proud to support the Brixton Pound. Independent businesses are vital to the economic and social well-being of the area and systems of local exchange like this that build mutual support and improve community relations are to be welcomed."
