Students - council tax discount

If you are a student living in Lambeth undertaking a course you could be paying less for your council tax.

You could qualify for your 'student status' discount if you are undertaking a course by:

  • attending a place of learning for formal tuition
  • distance learning through the Open University or similar institution
  • reading a PhD or similar that does not require you to attend a place of learning for formal tuition.

Education establishments throughout the European Union (EU) are valid for this discount.

This 'student status' definition was updated in May 2011. It now includes students who distance learn and don't attend a educational establishment full time. If you think you might now qualify for student status, regardless of when you started studying, contact our council tax offices to advise us. You can call us on 0345 302 2312 or email lambeth.ctax@secure.capita.co.uk. Alternatively, write to us at Lambeth Council Tax, PO Box 166, Erith, DA8 9DX.

How to apply

If you think you may be entitled to a reduction, download the reducing your bill application form or call 0345 302 2312 to be sent one.

The application form tells you what information we will need to see if you qualify for a discount. We may also need to visit for confirmation, so please provide a contact email address or phone number so we can make an appointment.

Evidence required

To qualify for 'student status' you will need us with evidence of their course of study.

Colleges in England and Wales will be able to issue you with a student certificate which can serve as your evidence.

For other educational establishments, a letter from its registration office giving the nature of the course, the amount of study expected of a successful student and confirmation of your continuing enrolment will be needed.
