General support for charities


Lloyds TSB Foundations

One of the largest grant-making trusts in the UK. The policy is to support underfunded charities so people, especially disadvantaged or disabled people, can play a fuller role in the community. They support a wide range of activities which fall within the broad areas of social and community needs, and education and training.

Groundwork Community Spaces

The £50 million lottery-funded Community Spaces programme was launched April 2008. The programme aims to:

  • create better local environments 
  • increase people’s access to quality local spaces for interaction, play and recreation 
  • increase the number of people actively involved in developing and running a practical environmental project that is visible in their community; 
  • improve partnerships between communities, support organisations and local authorities.

Not-for-profit community groups based in England can apply for the grants between £10,000 and £450,000.

Funding for youth related initiatives


Sutton Trust

The main objective of the Sutton Trust is to support innovative projects that provide educational opportunities for young people from non-privileged backgrounds. Your innovative start-up project should have the scope to benefit large numbers in the future.

The Sutton Trust tends to fund projects in a formal education setting, working primarily with organisations such as schools, universities, community groups, charities and research bodies. They do not fund individuals. 

Young People's Fund

£200 million to promote well-being and development
Groups supporting young people aged 11-18 (up to 25 with special needs) in areas such as physical and mental health, staying safe, developing skills for adulthood, making positive contributions to society, & overcoming disadvantage should apply for up to £150,000 for up to 3 year projects. It will be extremely competitive.

Family Learning

Big Lottery Fund has launched Family Learning, a programme that helps parents to understand more about how their children learn and encourages adults and children to learn as a family.

SPAN UK Link-Up grants

SPAN UK supports one-parent families in the UK through advice, guidance, online training and publications. Grants up to £1,000 for information services, Internet access, exchange days or training events.

Funding for health initiatives


Kings Fund

The Kings Fund provides support for a wide range of health community-based initiatives, designed by people living and working in London. It is an independent charitable foundation that works to improve health and health care for all, with a special focus on London.

The fund is seeking partners with a focus on mental health advocacy; promoting better sexual health; improving end-of-life care and supporting work in integrated health.

Funding for black and ethnic minority groups (BME)


Connecting Communities Plus Grant (up to £6,000)

This funding is for voluntary and community organisations in England to support activities that improve access and outcomes for black and ethnic minority (BME) communities in education, employment, health, housing and the criminal justice system; increase BME confidence in public services; tackle racism and extremism; bring together communities from different races and faiths and promote a sense of shared belonging.
