Animal licences
We are responsible for licensing:
- animal boarding establishments
- riding establishments
- dog breeding establishments
- dangerous wild animals, pet shops and zoos.
Regular inspections are made to licensed premises and an annual inspection is carried out by a veterinary surgeon.
Animal boarding establishment licences
Animal boarding establishments are businesses that provide accommodation for animals on behalf of their owners. The keeping and running of animal boarding establishments - catteries and kennels - is controlled by the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963.
An Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 licence runs for a 12 month period, renewable each year from 1 January.
Fee: £725 a year
Dog sitting service licences
A dog sitting service (Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963) licence runs for a 12 month period, renewable each year from 1 January.
Fee: £250 a year
Home boarding licences
The home boarding (Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963) licence is for the provision of overnight accommodation, and food, for an animal in a private dwelling which is not its own home in exchange for payment.
Home boarding offers a 'home from home' environment which some pet owners prefer.
The licence is not intended to involve informal private arrangements between friends and family to look after one another's pets, but rather 'commercial' establishments who actively advertise their home boarding services to the general public.
The licence will ensure that these businesses offer a consistent standard of welfare and care in the same way as traditional kennels and catteries.
We have identified a number of home boarding establishments operating in Lambeth and adopted nationally agreed model licence conditions for home boarding.
Contact will be made with those establishments already identified (initially only those boarding cats and/or dogs), and we will be advising owners on what they need to do to meet the licence conditions.
Fee: The price for the home boarding licence is to be £250 per annum.
Dog day crèche licences
Dog day creche (Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963) licences are strictly for a drop off in the morning and pick up in the evening, or anytime during the day, type of operation. It is different from boarding kennels, which boards animals for short and long term time spans.
Day care facilities for dogs are becoming increasingly popular, especially as more and more caring dog owners are realizing the benefits of leaving their beloved dogs at day care with other dogs instead of at home alone while they are at work.
The license is not intended to involve informal private arrangements between friends and family to look after one another's pets, but rather 'commercial' establishments who actively advertise their doggie day care/crèche services to the general public.
Fee: is £250 a year.
Dangerous wild animals licences
The keeping of certain species of wild animals is controlled by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.
The animals for which a licence is required before they may be kept are listed in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (Modification) Order 1984.
