Animal Licences

We are responsible for licensing animal boarding establishments, riding establishments, dog breeding establishments, dangerous wild animals, pet shops and zoos.

Regular inspections are made to licensed premises and an annual inspection is carried out by a veterinary surgeon. Unless stated, the licences are renewable each year as of 01 January.

Animal boarding establishment licences

Animal boarding establishments are the business of providing accommodation for animals (e.g. cats and dogs) on behalf of their owners.

The keeping and running of animal boarding establishments (Catteries and Kennels) is controlled by the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963.

Dangerous wild animals licences

The keeping of certain species of wild animals is controlled by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976.

The animals for which a licence is required before they may be kept are listed in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (Modification) Order 1984.

Dog breeding licences

A breeding establishment means any premises where more than two bitches are kept for the purposes of breeding for sale.

Establishments used for the breeding of dogs are controlled by the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973.

Pet shop licences

Keeping and running a pet shop is controlled by the Pet Animals Act 1951.

Riding establishment licences

A riding establishment is "the carrying on of a business of keeping horses to let them out for hire for riding or riding instruction".

Licences to keep a riding establishment are issued under the Riding Establishments Acts 1964 and 1970.

Zoo licences

We work in close parnership with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on all aspects of zoo licensing.

The zoo licence runs for a four year initial period from date of issue and 6 years there after.

Movement of Animals Order

A Movement of Animals Order (for pig, sheep, etc.) is issued by the local authority where the animals are normally kept/housed and a copy is sent to the local authority whose area the animals are to be moved to.

If you request a Movement of Animals Order you will be contacted/visited by the Corporation of London Veterinary Service on our behalf. They will issue the order and we will receive a copy.
