Hypnotism authorisation

If you wish to perform, demonstrate or exhibit an act of hypnotism in public, at or in connection with an entertainment event, you must have been authorised by the appropriate local authority, in accordance with the Hypnotism Act 1952.

This applies to any act of hypnotism, mesmerism or similar process, which produces a form of induced sleep or trance in which the person is more susceptible to suggestion or direction.

Self-hypnosis, and hypnotism for scientific, research or medical purposes, does not require authorisation.

Applying for authorisation

To apply for authorisation for a hypnotism performance, demonstration or exhibition, please complete the application form and return it to the Licensing Section. Alternatively, applications can be made online, using the link below.

A fee of £150.00 is payable with an application for authorisation.

Please ensure that you apply at least 28 days before your proposed performance, to allow adequate time for your application to be processed.

When considering your application, Licensing Officers may consult other local authorities in areas where the hypnotist has previously performed. Officers may also check the details of the hypnotist's public liability insurance, and verify any membership of a professional organisation - links for some recognised organisations are given in the useful websites box.

Can I give the performance before my application is granted (will tacit consent apply)?

No. It is in the public interest that the authority must process your application before it can be granted. If you have not heard from us within a reasonable period, please contact us. You can use the contact details above.

Conditions attached to authorisations

A number of standard conditions will be attached to an authorisation, which you must comply with. A list of these conditions is included with the application form. Breaching any of these conditions is an offence, for which you may be prosecuted.

Please also note that it is against the law to hypnotise any person under the age of 18 years during a performance.
