Sports grounds licensing
We issue safety certificates to all designated sports grounds in Lambeth, to ensure that they provide safe accommodation for spectators. We also certify stands at smaller grounds.
All sports grounds that have been designated by the Secretary of State must hold a safety certificate issued by the local authority. This will include all grounds with a capacity of more than 10,000 spectators, as well as football league grounds which hold more than 5,000 spectators. The ground will be inspected and comments sought from a number of statutory bodies before a certificate is issued, to ensure that the ground complies with the safety criteria set by the Government.
Even if a sports ground does not require a safety certificate for the whole ground, any covered stand that holds more than 500 spectators must still be certified by the local authority. Safety certificates can be issued to stands that have been permanently constructed or that are only intended for use for a temporary period.
