Brixton Market is a vibrant melting pot of African and Caribbean culture, which is reflected in its stalls and produce for sale. With three hundred stalls this makes it Europe's biggest Caribbean food market. You'll find an abundance of fishmonger, butchers and greengrocers and you can buy pretty much anything from fresh fish to halal meat, herbs and spices, and exotic fruit and vegetables such as okra and plantain, all at a fraction of the price that you would pay in a supermarket.

There are several markets that go under the title of 'Brixton Market'. Electric Avenue - the first street in the UK to be lit by electricity and the very same Avenue that Eddy Grant sang about. This area along with Brixton Station Road has some of the finest exotic fruit and vegetable stalls - flying fish, breadfruit; you will find it all here.

The shops lining the market streets in specialise in afro-Caribbean hair and beauty products, CDs, records, clothes, fabrics and homeware.

Take shelter in the undercover markets of Market Row or Brixton Village Market formerly known as Granville Arcade. The indoor market with entrances on Coldharbour lane and Atlantic Road is a thriving place to shop for organic goods, arts, crafts, fashion and gifts. There is also a fantastic Caribbean bakery under this roof. And if you get tired, there's some excellent cafes where you can have a drink and take a breather.

Market Row is also a good place to go to eat and browse around and check out Reliance Avenue, the narrow covered market that runs off Brixton Road and Electric Avenue.
