Citizenship Ceremonies
We hold regular citizenship ceremonies in Lambeth Town Hall. These ceremonies are an opportunity for applicants to celebrate their new citizenship and for the council to celebrate the borough's cultural diversity.
We ensure that the ceremonies are enjoyable and meaningful, creating a friendly environment for new citizens. It is hoped that the ceremonies will encourage new citizens to play an active part in the community.
What happens at the ceremony?
The ceremony is held as a group although it is possible to arrange for a private ceremony for a fee. During the ceremony you are required to:
- take either the Oath or Affirmation
- say the pledge of loyalty to the UK
A Lambeth dignitary will present you with a commemorative gift box containing your citizenship certificate. You will also receive a pack from the Home Office, along with your passport application form.
What do I need to bring to my ceremony?
When you attend a ceremony you need to bring your Home Office invitation letter and a form of photo identification with you (e.g. a passport or driver’s licence).
What is the difference between an Oath and an Affirmation?
If you decide to take an Oath you will be swearing to God. An Affirmation does not have any religious context.
Example of Oath:
“I (name) swear by almighty God that on becoming a British citizen I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors according to law.”
Example of Affirmation:
“I (name) do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that on becoming a British citizen I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her heirs and successors according to law.”
What do I pledge?
An example of Pledge:
“I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen.”
How do I make a complaint?
We want to know when things have not gone well so that we can try and put them right. If you have a complaint please contact the Lambeth Register Office. If you are unhappy with our response we can send you information on Lambeth Council’s formal complaints procedure.
