Document summary

All councils now have a legal duty to promote gender equality. For Lambeth Council, this mean taking steps to:

  • eliminate unlawful sex discrimination and harassment
  • promote equality of opportunity between men and women.

This duty applies to:

  • Policy-making
  • Decision-making
  • Service design and delivery
  • Employment practice
  • Services and functions the council buys in from other providers.

Lambeth Council wholeheartedly welcomes the new gender equality duty. We see it as a powerful vehicle to address inequality - it signals real change.

Our Gender Equality Scheme 2007/10 sets out what we will do to meet the duty over the next three years.
