Single Equality Scheme (SES)
In March 2010 our Cabinet approved our first ever Single Equality Scheme (SES) and supporting action plan documents. These documents set out how we will achieve ‘excellence’ in equalities in Lambeth by 2013 and meet the Equality Framework for Local Government.
The SES represents an important stage in our drive for equality. It brings together our previous separate equality schemes, strategies and action plans into one document.
The SES also considers the changes to our duties as a council set out in the Equality Act 2010 that came into force on 1 October 2010. Read the full Act.
The SES sets out how we aim to make equality, diversity and the principles of human rights part of our everyday work across the council. We aim to continue to promote and deliver equality as an integral part of who we are as a council and what we do for our customers, including staff, residents and visitors to the borough.
Over the next three years, we have set ourselves six objectives. They are:
- To support and celebrate our wide-ranging communities, many traditions and shared values
- To increase opportunities for under-represented communities to be involved in developing policies and making decisions that affect them
- To improve our systems for gathering evidence on inequality
- To promote equality through providing accessible, effective and efficient services
- To assess the impact of our equality activities
- To promote equality in employment and a workplace based on respect and a skilled and talented workforce that reflects our communities
