Common Induction Standards
The CIS programme is for people entering the social care profession. It is also useful to employees who are moving from one service user group to a different service user group within adult social care. The CIS runs over a 12 week period and is designed to assist care workers in providing a higher quality care and support for the service users they work with. The CIS also prepares workers for entry onto the appropriate NVQ Health and Social Care.
Learner outcomes
The CIS covers the following standards:
- Understanding principles of care
- Understanding the organisation and role of the worker
- Maintaining safety at work
- Communicating effectively
- Recognising and responding to abuse and neglect
- Developing as a worker
Course structure
The standards cover the core areas of knowledge that care workers need to be aware of before they can work with service users without supervision. The standards provide a structured start for new workers and are intended to build confidence by developing competency, and supporting continuing professional development.
As well as attending structured training sessions, candidates gain knowledge of the standards through a variety of flexible methods such as observation, reading books and publications, or through training and discussions with colleagues. Managers play a key role in ensuring that their staff meet the required outcomes in each knowledge area and assess progress themselves.
