Registered Managers Award - NVQ level 4

This is a nationally recognised award, which will give you a qualification that is recognised by all employers within the care sector.

The Registered Managers Award is now a requirement for all registered managers in the adult sector, and this will be extended to include day care, home care and possibly other services.

Course structure

The award for NVQ Level 4 is made up of eight units. There are four core units and a choice of many optional units, of which you have to complete four.

The optional units that you choose will be based on those units which most align with what you do. For managers and assistant managers, these units must include the MCI management units.

You will be provided with a skill scan to assist you with choosing the likely units to be completed. This skill scan will be analysed to identify any potential learning areas for candidates.

Your skill scan will also form a part of your NVQ evidence and will be placed in your portfolio as evidence towards one of the units.

Where appropriate, you will also be working towards the registered managers award, which is a requirement for the new care standards. This will involve you in completing at least two further units to achieve this award.

Although the organisation is providing time for the award for you, there will be work that you do in your own time.

Mentors

You may be provided with a mentor from within the organisation to assist you with your award if there are sufficient people who agree to undertake this.

Where possible, this will be a person who has already completed their NVQ level 4 award and possibly the registered managers award.

Course requirements

An NVQ award requires that you:

  • Are assessed carrying out your normal duties by an assessor from our organisation
  • Develop evidence towards your award arising from your normal work
  • Develop an understanding of the award and the units you are doing by attending the underpinning knowledge workshops. 80% attendance is required.
  • Participate in candidate workshops
  • Write specific pieces of work for the award, which include reflective accounts of your practice (guidance will be provided for these)
  • Enable others to contribute to your award by the giving of witness testimony
  • Compile a portfolio of evidence for the award (this will be supplied to you during your induction days)

Course units

A unit is made up of elements. A unit will contain 2 elements or more. Each element is made up of the following:

  • Performance criteria – this the standard to which you have to perform
  • Scope – the situations you may meet

Each unit also has knowledge evidence and understanding – what you must know to underpin the work that you do.

In the main, there is one set of knowledge and understanding for each unit, however, in some of the management units and some of the care units, this is individual to each element.

The most important type of evidence you can have is direct observation by your assessor.

Support and materials

For the award, you will be provided with:

  • Assessor/internal verifier
  • Standards
  • Workbook
  • Portfolios already made up to begin collecting your evidence
  • Support workshops
  • Support from assessors via other methods
  • Access to training workshops/other methods of learning to provide underpinning knowledge evidence where gaps exist
  • Mentor (if possible).

Lambeth ACS facilitates the workshops and registers candidates. So far we have been able to pay for everyone our provider agencies have recommended. We hope to do so again this year.
