Cooperative libraries consultation
We want to work with you to deliver a Library service for Lambeth that is really excellent. This will include a traditional approach where there is a quiet space to come and read or collect the latest novel to take home. As well as changing to be in tune with the way that people live - we know that people want to download books onto their e-readers and look at them on the tube.
The challenge is to create a service that offers something useful to everyone and Lambeth is committed to addressing this. Some improvements are happening straight away, but we need you to help us with some of the big decisions about what to do next.
We are determined to make the experience of going to your local library a positive one.
Ideas include:
- computers, e-books, newspapers and magazines, audio books
- a range of activities for all age range
- having efficient modern equipment
- it might also be about libraries being a place for you to get advice on benefits or even to sort out getting your garden waste collected.
We also know that not everyone can get to their library so we want to develop an outreach service that means we come out to you if you need us to. Our 'pop-up' library idea is that we could have library services in different locations such as community centres or even cafes - this is about finding and creating a service that meets your needs. If we can get this right then these places can become the centre of our communities.
We know that we have to work within our budgets but our view is that we can create an exciting service that is really useful for everyone. Our journey to becoming a cooperative council is about giving you the power to decide how things are run and also about who runs them. What we need to do now is get your feedback on exactly what we need to do.
Following on from the Library Commission we are running a consultation from Friday 27 January to Friday 20 April 2012.
