Your borough, your budget, your choice

Each year we invite residents and local groups to help decide how the council allocates its budget. In 2009, we launched "Your borough, your budget, your choice" which gave residents the power to decide how the council spent £250,000.

In 2010, the second year of the scheme, we asked residents and local groups to submit ideas for funding. Twelve projects were shortlisted and divided into four bands of £100,000, £75,000, £50,000 and £25,000.

Between 1 November and the 1 December 2010, we asked local residents to vote for their four favourite projects.

Winning projects

More than 8,000 residents voted for their favourite projects. The four winning projects are below.

Band 1 - £100,000

Brixton Reuse Centre, Coldharbour ward, Brixton.
This project is being developed and delivered by community organisation Transition Town Brixton and a group of local reuse enterprises. The project will provide local volunteering opportunities and new green jobs - equipping local people with skills for a low carbon economy.

Funding will be used to transform a disused garage block near Loughborough Junction into a mini trading estate where waste materials will be used to repair and remanufacture products. It is estimated that this work would stop 200 tonnes of waste going to landfill each year, including furniture, appliances, computers, textiles and more.

Band 2 - £75,000

Wellfield Community Centre, Streatham Wells ward, Streatham.
The Wellfield Centre helps local residents be actively involved in their community. The centre provides unique practical support to a wide variety of community groups as well as to the many initiatives run by Streatham Youth and Community Trust.

Funding will be used to make substantial repairs to the centre’s roof as well as the installation of new guttering and insulation that the original Victorian building urgently needs. This work will ensure that this unique centre can make the most of its potential and continue to play a vital role in the community for many years to come.

Band 3 - £50,000

Waterloo Action Centre, Bishop’s Ward, North Lambeth.
The Waterloo Action Centre provides activities such as dance, music and computer classes as well as free advice on benefits and legal queries. The centre particularly focuses on the health and wellbeing of older people through developing friendships which lead to mutual support, visits and help if affected by illness or frailty.

Funding will be used to repair the centre’s roof and ceiling to bring part of the building back into use, install a proper dance floor in the main hall, soundproof meeting rooms to prevent users disturbing others, modernise the existing toilets and purchase equipment for sports, music and computer activities.

Band 4 - £25,000

Southside Rehab Association, Knight’s Hill ward, Norwood.
Southside Rehabilitation Association (SRA) in Norwood is a charity providing employment training and intermediate employment for people with mental health problems who want to get into employment. In addition, they provide places for local people/school children wanting work or volunteering experience.

Funding will be used to replace their 21 year old cleaning crew minibus with a low carbon emission alternative, update print room equipment and purchase a professional coffee-maker for their café.
