Your borough, your budget, your choice!

Councillor Jim Dickson presenting the winning £125,000 cheque to Peter Newmark (Friends of Streatham Common)Each year Lambeth Council invites residents to help decide how the council's budget is allocated. This year residents have had even more say and were invited to decide how the council spends £250,000.

Between 14 September and the 23 October 2009 residents were told about 12 projects divided into three bands of £125,000, £75,000 and £50,000. Residents were asked to choose one project out of each of the three bands that they would like the council to fund.

Band 1 - £125,000

Improved games and sports area on Streatham Common.
Streatham Common has two grass football pitches that, due to their popularity, have deteriorated over time. This project will bring these pitches back into regular use by installing a new drainage system and pitch markings. A new drainage system will allow the restoration of the two grass football pitches and other sports and games activities.

Band 2 - £75,000

Children's wet play area at Norwood Park.
This project will replace the redundant paddling pool with a children’s wet play area. The idea is to provide children with a natural play space and will involve creating wet play in a new state-of-the-art landscaped area beside the children's play area.

Band 3 - £50,000

Outdoor exercise equipment at Brockwell Park.
Brockwell Park's trim trail was a popular and well-frequented exercise area that, owing to its currently overused condition, would benefit from an upgrade. This project will involve installing an outdoor exercise circuit that will supplement existing sporting facilities in the park and provide workouts for users of any age.
