Lambeth Council is a democratic organisation. It comprises 63 elected councillors who are responsible for agreeing policies about provision of services and how the council's money is spent. There are other people who also represent the interests of the people of Lambeth such as MPs, MEPs and members of the London Assembly at the Greater London Authority (GLA).
MPs, MEPs and the GLA
Lambeth residents are also represented on a London-wide level, on a national level and on a European level by the following people:
- There are three Members of Parliament who represent parts of Lambeth in the House of Commons.
- There are 9 Members of the European Parliament who look out for the interests of Londoners at the European level.
- The Greater London Authority was established in 2000 to represent the interests of Londoners and to direct the future of London, particularly on issues surrounding transport, policing, planning, culture, environment, health, fire and emergency services and economic planning. Valerie Shawcross is the London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark.
- The executive of the GLA is led by an elected Mayor for London, presently Boris Johnson. The decisions of the executive are scrutinised by the London Assembly, which is made up of elected members.
There are three parliamentary constituencies in Lambeth. Each constituency has one MP. The MPs are all available at regular advice surgeries to meet with constituents.

Elections for the council are held every four years. The most recent borough council election took place on 4 May 2006.
Councillor Steve Reed is the leader of the council. He oversees the work and direction of the council, making sure that local people get the services they require. In this section you can read more about the work he is doing.
The Mayor of Lambeth is elected each year at the Annual Meeting of the council. The Mayor is the first citizen of Lambeth and has several specific roles to play for the authority during their term of office, including chairing full Meetings of the Council. The current Mayor is Councillor Christopher Wellbelove.
