Leader's review of 2008
What a year 2008 has been for everyone in Lambeth. Global issues have had a real local impact, showing just how much we're now part of an interdependent world. The worldwide economic downturn has left local people worried about jobs, homes and household incomes. I'm glad we have stepped up to the mark with proposals to help those worst affected. We're looking at providing help to families who are in debt, help to stop people's home being repossessed, help to get people back into work if they lose their job, and help with buying basic food and paying rising energy bills. We'll also keep council tax as low as possible. That's a council on the side of ordinary people.
People worry about crime, but our strong partnership with the police and the community has seen crime fall across Lambeth this year. Violent youth crime, in particular, is down. After two decades of underinvestment in youth services, its right the council is now investing record amounts in youth services that give young people positive things to do. Our schools have seen their best ever exam results - and while 24 Lambeth schools are now rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted not a single one is failing. That's good news for our young people.
Our plans to regenerate our town centres are moving forward. Brixton Rec has been refurbished and new sports or leisure centres are on the way for Streatham, Clapham, Kennington and Waterloo. New plans are finally underway for West Norwood. Things have slowed down because of the credit crunch while the financing is reviewed, but we expect building work to begin in the new year.
The past year has presented many challenges, but our council and our community have worked together and we're now in a stronger position to face the challenges of the coming year. Did you know, for instance, that the council now has the highest level of financial reserves for a generation? That means we can keep council tax down next year and are in a better position to protect services as the economy slows down.
Things might look tough at the moment, but there's still so much to celebrate here in Lambeth. This is one of the most exciting, vibrant and diverse places in the world. From the bright lights of the South Bank down to the beautiful green spaces of Clapham and Streatham Commons, Lambeth is a great place to be.
