Meet the leader

Leader of the council, Councillor Steve ReedCouncillor Steve Reed was elected as Leader of Lambeth Council in May 2006. He has been a local councillor for Brixton Hill Ward since 1998.

As leader Steve oversees the work and direction of the council, making sure that local people get the services they require. He is responsible for chairing the Cabinet and external relations including Lambeth First, our local strategic partnership.

Since Steve became leader, Lambeth has seen its performance improve from a 1 to a 3 star authority, the election of a Youth Mayor for Lambeth and the opening of new secondary schools. This year council tax has been frozen to help local people through the economic downturn.

Steve previously served as Leader of the Opposition (2002-2006), deputy leader of the council and executive member for education (2000-2002). Before becoming leader of the council, Steve worked in academic and professional publishing for a global publishing company.

In 2008, Steve was appointed to London Councils' multi-party executive, holding the portfolio for housing.
