How to become a Councillor

Elections for the council are held every four years. The most recent Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2006.

You may stand as a Councillor if you live or work in the borough for which you are standing for election.

The majority of people stand for election as a representative of a political party. However, anybody is entitled to stand as a councillor.

How do I get nominated?

You need to find 10 people who live in the ward you wish to stand in; they must be on the Register of Electors for the ward and agree to sign your nomination paper.

You will also need to keep a record of the money you spend during your campaign as law governs the amount you can spend and you have to provide this information after the election.
