Promoting sport in the community

Javelin throwingLocated in one of the most deprived and densely populated areas of Lambeth, the Lillian Baylis Community Sports Project offers thousands of local people the chance to get healthy and be active.

The former school site now provides a unique community hub, offering a range of sport, physical and healthy living activity as well as a positive and safe environment for young people.

Last year the project attracted more than 10,000 local residents, mostly young people from hard-to-reach, low income, black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

The project’s success is down to an effective relationship with the community, the private sector, voluntary groups and the council.

This has enabled the project to secure additional funding and national recognition through this year’s Municipal Journal awards scheme for promoting active communities.
