Cooperative council early adopters
The cooperative council is our big idea for local government and the aim of it is to work more closely with our communities to design and deliver services.
To get the cooperative council started we have identified a number of services that will become champions for it.
Black Cultural Archives
The new Black Cultural Archives heritage centre at Raleigh Hall is scheduled to open in spring 2013. Support on the project has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Greater London Authority, and Lambeth Council.
We have transferred part of the former Lilian Baylis School site in Kennington to a new community organisation, the Black Prince Trust (BPT), which will invest over £2 million in improving and extending sports and community facilities on the site.
The Brixton Pound
The Brixton Pound (B£) is designed to support Brixton businesses and encourage local trade and production. It’s a complementary currency, working alongside (not replacing) pounds sterling, for use by independent local shops and traders.
Community-led commissioning
We will continue to work with community representatives from Waterloo, Herne Hill, Stockwell and Loughborough Junction to explore neighbourhood approaches to designing and delivering public services. This includes building community capacity, so citizens can support needs assessment and move to leading the commissioning processes.
Lambeth now has at least 12 community forums covering the different 'villages' and town centres across Lambeth.
These forums are the heart of local neighbourhoods running projects and helping to shape decisions on local services. Already they have run greening and parks projects with local community groups, supported local arts and markets, helped out with youth and elderly projects and campaigned for better services.
Community Freshview is an award winning scheme that sees residents and the council join forces to improve their neighbourhoods.
We are working in partnership with residents from Streets Ahead and Caldwell Gardens, and Reay and Durand Primary Schools to transform the streets around Hackford Road.
Green Community Champions
We will continue to support and develop this grassroots programme, which has 500 'champions' working with over 60 groups and approximately 5,000 residents to improve local communities.
Integrated Offender Management (IOM)
IOM is an overarching framework for bringing together agencies in local areas to prioritise interventions with offenders who cause crime in their local area.
Lambeth City Learning Centre
We have been working with CfBT Education Trust (a not-for-profit education consultancy and service organisation) since 1998 to provide support to Lambeth schools in arts and culture, technology and family learning activities.
Lambeth's housing strategy
We are working on a new housing strategy for Lambeth and we would like you to help us shape it. This is so that Lambeth homes meet your needs and aspirations.
Lambeth Library Commission
Local people will have more say in deciding how libraries are run under proposals from Lambeth’s Library Commission.
Lambeth Living Well
Lambeth Living Well is a group of organisations from across Lambeth who are working on a new way of planning and running mental health services.
Lambeth Resource Centre
Lambeth Resource Centre (West Norwood), is a day centre providing services for people with disabilities.
Myatt’s Fields Park is a great example of what can be achieved when we work with local people to improve things. In just a few years they have seen a new playground for the park, a thriving new café, and community greenhouses that provide training for local people and food for the park’s café, all of which have come about through cooperative working.
We are working with Stockwell Partnership to deliver public realm improvements in Lambeth. Stockwell Partnership is leading on the delivery of the public engagement and we are leading on designing and constructing the improvements.
Personalised adult social care services
One of our corporate priorities is to develop personalised care where users take more control of their own service choices.
We are working with local residents, housing associations, businesses and cycling interest groups to provide cycle parking where no suitable or vacant space for the installation of cycle parking exists.
TOPAZ has been in operation since November 2009. Their core aims are early intervention, preventative work and promoting people’s independence and wellbeing in the community.
West Norwood Feast
West Norwood Feast is a people-powered market run by local people with the help of Lambeth Council.
Youth and play services will be transformed, as we work with the community to design and manage our council-run adventure playgrounds, youth centres and stay and play one o’clock clubs in new ways.
