Our scrutiny committees

Lambeth has six scrutiny committees: the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which oversees and co-ordinates the work of the sub-committees and the scrutiny function in general; and five cross-cutting sub-committees, which cover issues arising from all the council's services. These committees are made up of local councillors.

Overview and Scrutiny Committee

• Monitors the physical, social and economic environment, and regeneration and enterprise in Lambeth.
• Has ultimate responsibility for reviewing the council's finances, performance management and policy development issues.
• Oversees the work of the other four scrutiny sub-committees and the commissions.

Children and Young People's Service Scrutiny Sub-Committee

This sub-committee is concerned with:

• The provision, planning and management of education, training, arts and culture in Lambeth.
• The provision, planning and management of children's and youth services in social services.

Environment, Culture and Community Safety Scrutiny Sub-Committee

This sub-committee is concerned with:

• The provision, planning and management of borough-wide and strategic environmental services (including parks, streets, transport and waste disposal).
• Crime and the safety of the borough's residents.

Finance Scrutiny Sub Committee

This sub-committee undertakes scrutiny of the council's finance and spending.

This sub-committee is concerned with:

• The provision and management of Healthcare Services in Lambeth.
• Health and wellbeing issues affecting the residents and those working in the borough.
• The planning and management of social care, elderly persons and mental welfare services in Lambeth.

Additional committees

Joint Health Scrutiny Committee

Lambeth's Health Scrutiny Committee has set up a Joint Health Scrutiny Committee with Southwark Council's Health and Social Care Scrutiny Committee. The joint committee was established to review South London and the Maudsley NHS Trust's proposals on the future of mental health crisis care.

Scrutiny commissions

Every year the Overview and Scrutiny Committee and sub-committees agree on areas for in depth investigation and review. For each of these topics an individual commission (working group) with between three and five non-Cabinet councillors is set up.
