Youth Service Commission

The Youth Service Commission was established in July 2009 in response to concerns expressed by the Children and Young People's Service Scrutiny Sub-Committee about matters raised regarding the management of the council's Youth Service. In acknowledgement of the fact that the Youth Service was a service in transition, the commission was intended to be forward looking and constructive.

A number of evidence-gathering sessions were held with senior officers responsible for the Youth Service, considering both the national context and looking in depth at the structure and function of the Youth Service in Lambeth. The commission was also keen to explore the role of the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) in youth provision, and a question and answer session was held with a selection of VCS providers commissioned by the council to deliver youth services in Lambeth.

This commission has now concluded its investigation and produced a final report, containing recommendations for how improvements to the service can be made. This report and an Action Plan, which sets out how the recommendations will be implemented by the department, were approved by the Cabinet at its meeting on 22 November 2010.
