Building Schools for the Future (BSF)
What is Building Schools for the Future?
Building Schools for the Future (BSF) division is responsible for delivering the Building Schools for the Future programme of secondary school renewal and other capital investment in Lambeth schools.
BSF is a government initiative that aims to promote a change in the quality of secondary education. This is a major project of replacing and refurbishing all local authority secondary schools in the country within the next 10 to 15 years. Lambeth recently won a host of national awards for its BSF programme including being named BSF Local Authority of the Year.
The BSF division is also responsible for delivering the Primary Capital Programme and all other capital programmes which impact on primary schools, nursery schools, children’s centres, play areas and other young people’s community facilities across the borough.
With technology taking an increasing role in education and community, there is a need for increased flexibility and adaptability in educational facilities as new generations develop skills and adapt to a changing world.
BSF provides an opportunity to rethink how education is delivered and to ensure that students and teachers have the right environment and facilities to reach their full potential. Recent studies (PricewaterhouseCoopers and others) have shown that innovative building and classroom design can impact positively on the effectiveness of teaching and learning and on the experience of students, teachers and the wider community. Watch the difference BSF has made
Lambeth has an award-winning BSF programme recognised nationally for its excellent designs, innovation and transformational vision. You can watch three short films about Lambeth's completed BSF projects at The Michael Tippett School, Elm Court School and Park Campus to see the impact and real difference the investment in Lambeth schools is making.
The national BSF programme
The national BSF programme is administered by Partnership for Schools (PFS), an independent body set up by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to assist local authorities in developing their BSF programmes.
Various checks are built in to ensure each BSF programme meets the aims of the national programme. An appraisal is carried out by an independent team of assessors at critical stages in the the project to assure that it is being successfully managed and can progress to the next stage. See the Building Schools for the Future website for more details.
BSF brings over £280 million in educational funding to Lambeth, providing a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop innovative teaching and learning environments in the borough.
BSF is more than just buildings and Lambeth will work with all stakeholders to deliver a successful programme that is focused on improving educational outcomes rather than just the renovation of buildings.
The delivery of the Phase 2 will be through a Local Education Partnership (LEP). The LEP, as proposed under the BSF Programme, will take the form of a public private partnership between Lambeth, Partnerships for Schools (PfS) and a Private Sector Partner, selected in open competition under European Union procurement rules.
BSF Primary and Community, as part of the Building Schools for the Future Division provide centrally-funded support to primary schools and community buildings.
Our schools will be bright exciting buildings, designed to be flexible and adaptable.
