Home-Start Lambeth
Home-Start Lambeth is a charitable organisation that offers support, friendship and practical help for parents living in the borough of Lambeth, with at least one child under the age of five.
Home-Start Lambeth has been established in the local community since 1998; however the Home-Start network across the UK has been established for over thirty years. Home-Start Lambeth is currently funded by London Borough of Lambeth, charitable trusts and donations from the public.
Home-Start Lambeth works with parents from all different backgrounds who are experiencing some kind of pressure, stress or difficulty which means they are struggling to cope without support. Families can either be referred by an agency or they can self refer.
Home visiting
The core service offered by Home-Start Lambeth is home visiting support by a carefully matched volunteer. Home-Start Lambeth recruits and train volunteers to visit and support families, for 2-3 hours each week, in their own homes to prevent family crisis and breakdown. Our volunteers understand the difficulties and the joys of family life; they are parents themselves, or have significant parenting experience.
The aim of support is to enable families to achieve their desired goals, build their confidence and self-esteem, and give their children the best possible start in life so that the children can attain their full potential.
Home-Start Lambeth family support groups
The Home-Start Lambeth Family Support Groups are run by Home-Start Lambeth staff at three Lambeth Children's Centres. Two of the groups are run in partnership with Early Years Literacy Development Workers.
The group aims to:
- Reduce isolation and improve cultural and community for families
- Aid the building of self-esteem and confidence, for both child and parents
- Promote and encourage learning, play, and creativity in a stimulating environment
- Prepare children for the future, by playing and learning together.
Visiting professionals attend the group to provide advice and community provisions/links to the parents, children, volunteers and staff.
Group sessions
Mondays - Woodmansterne Children's Centre, Stockport Road, Streatham Vale, 10am-11.30am.
Tuesdays - Brixton Children's Centre, Mostyn Road, Brixton, 10am-11.30am (Run in partnership with Lydia Hutchings, Literacy Development Worker).
Thursdays - Vauxhall Children's Centre, Wickham Street, Vauxhall, 10am-12pm (Run in partnership with Hilary Marrinan, Literacy Development Worker).
