Education Psychology Service
Educational Psychology is about how children and young people develop and learn. Educational Psychologists (EPs) have a first degree in psychology or equivalent and specialist training in educational psychology to Masters or Doctoral level.
EPs work with teachers, parents and carers and other professionals to bring about positive change and promote children’s progress, well-being and inclusion in their education setting.
Teachers, parents/ carers and other professionals consult EPs about a wide range of concerns such as learning difficulties, social, emotional and behavioural problems, physical difficulties and classroom management issues.
All Lambeth schools, and other educational settings have the opportunity to buy in a number of EP visits each year. Schools have an allocated EP who visits regularly. The EP works closely with the school’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) and teachers. The SENCo, in discussion with the pupil’s parents/carers, will usually request the involvement of the Educational Psychologist. For children under 5 it is usually professionals working in the Health Authority, in discussion with parents / carers, who request the involvement of the Educational Psychology Service (EPS).
An EP works directly works with with the people who have regular contact with the children and who have the most significant impact on their lives. Through consultation with these people the most appropriate on going involvement of an EP is identified.
This could include:
- observation of the child
- assessment of strengths and needs
- meeting with the child to understand the child’s views on school, their learning and strengths and needs
- discussing concerns with other agencies such as the Speech and language service, occupational therapist, CAMHS etc
EPs also provide support and training for groups including parents and staff in schools.
