Ethnic Minority Achievement Team (EMAT)

The Ethnic Minority Achievement Team (EMAT) supports schools to raise achievement of ethnic minority pupils. Our resources are used to meet the needs of pupils for whom English is an additional language (EAL), including refugees and asylum seekers, and Gypsy, Roma Travelers; and for closing the achievement gap between low or underachieving ethnic minority groups.

EMAT is responsible for allocating the Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (EMAG) to schools and monitoring its use.

Other services the team provides include the Interpreting and Translation service (ITS) and the Traveller Education service

The team also gives support to headteachers and teachers by running courses and providing consultancy and advice. EMAT has produced a Toolkit for schools to help them manage the support for raising achievement of EAL and ethnic minority pupils.

Lambeth has published a policy document which explains how it will tackle racism and promote race equality.
