Golden Hellos - an incentive for those training in specific Secondary subjects
What is a Golden Hello?
Golden Hellos are taxable, one-off payments made at the start of your second year of teaching, after you successfully complete your NQT Induction period, for teachers of priority subjects in secondary state-maintained schools.
Which subjects offer Golden Hello payments?
The current list of subjects offering Golden Hello payments are:
- Mathematics, Science and Applied Science - £5,000
- Information and communications technology (ICT), Applied ICT, Design and Technology, Modern Languages, Music and Religious Education - £2,500
What are the eligibility criteria for Golden Hello payments?
- You must undertake/have undertaken a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - those undertaking other courses are not eligible.
- You must train/have trained, at Secondary level, in one of the subjects listed above as part of your PGCE - Primary trainees, and Secondary trainees in other subjects are not eligible.
- You must make your application within twelve months of completing your NQT Induction period - there are circumstances which allow this period to be extended to twenty four months (maternity leave, for example).
- You must have either a permanent employment contract, or a fixed-term contract, of at least two terms (where the school year is made up of six terms) in length.
- You must be teaching for at least 50% of your teaching timetable in the subject in which you trained.
How do I apply for my Golden Hello payment?
If you are eligible for a Golden Hello payment, you should contact your Initial Teacher Training provider for an application form - Local Authorities do not provide these.
You should complete the form and return it to the applicable person in the Local Authority in which you are working at the time of application - you should not return it to the Local Authority in which you completed your NQT Induction, if you have moved schools.
You should not return your application form before you have begun your first post-NQT Induction term of teaching, as it cannot be processed before this time.
Please scan your completed form and email it to Dave Coram at dcoram@lambeth.gov.uk.
Please note that you will not be eligible for the Golden Hello if notice to terminate the contract is given before the Golden Hello payment is received, and that you must continue to be employed in an eligible role until receipt of the Golden Hello.
Applicants who leave before payment of the golden hello will forfeit this payment.
