Schools Human Resources

The Schools' Human Resources Service helps deliver a skilled and valued workforce to schools, motivated to achieve excellence. The service recognises that staff are an important resource in schools and play a key role in raising achievement.

Purpose

The Schools' Human Resources Service aims to achieve the following:

  • recruitment and retention of high quality school based staff
  • effective management of staff
  • environment in which high quality staff are attracted and in which staff are valued, motivated and able to deliver the best standards of education to those who live and work in Lambeth.
  • school improvement through the exercise of the authority's statutory responsibilities
  • positive and harmonious industrial relations framework enabling customers and stakeholders to achieve their educational and business objectives.
  • recruitment and retention of high calibre teachers (including headteachers) and support staff
  • supporting the leadership and management of schools so as to safeguard the Council against litigation in Employment Tribunals.

The Schools' Human Resources Service provides a range of HR support through a service level agreement which covers statutory employment functions (e.g. CRB and Child protection) for which the LEA are responsible.
Casework including discipline, capability, managing staff reorganisation, sickness, recruitment and selection, and advice on terms and conditions and contracts of employment. This is carried out by personal visits, telephone advice, HR Matters, Training sessions, and the attendance at Governing Body meetings.

The aim of the service is to operate best employment practice to recruit and retain high calibre staff to avoid litigation wherever possible to give support to defend employment tribunal action.
