Teacher training - your options

ClassroomSo, you're thinking about undertaking some training - which of the following best describes you?

School-leaver

You will need to have a GCSE in Maths, English and Science (Grade C or better) and follow a university course leading to a degree qualification.

There are two options available:

As we receive a number of requests we are unable to assist with finding school placements, either pre-training or during training. Please contact the schools directly.

Graduates

You have two main options open to you.

  • The majority of post-graduates looking to get into teaching undertake a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This generally takes one year as a full-time course or up to two years as a part-time course.
You can choose to train in a higher education institute, via flexible distance learning or in a school.
  • Some post-graduates enter teaching through the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP).
This is an employment-based route for those with relevant subject knowledge, gained as part of their degree.

In addition to your degree qualification, you must also have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C in the GCSE examination in English Language, Mathematics and Science.

A very small number of teachers come into teaching after training on the following programmes:

  • Registered Teacher Programme (RTP)
This programme allows candidates who have completed two years of higher education (or equivalent) to qualify as a teacher while employed in a school.
  • Teach First
You would spend two years working in challenging secondary schools qualifying as a teacher while completing leadership training and work experience with leading employers.

Please note that training is organised by universities (as Initial Teacher Training Providers), and not by Lambeth - please direct any questions you have regarding course specifics to the provider in question.

As we receive a number of requests we are unable to assist with finding school placements, either pre-training or during training - please contact schools directly.

Overseas trained teachers

If you are a teacher qualified to teach in a country other than the UK, you will need to gain UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in order to teach for more than four years in the UK.

You can find out more about the process you will need to go through by visiting our Overseas Trained Teacher webpage.

Secondary school teachers

If you are a secondary school teacher, with Qualified Teacher Status and people management experience, who is looking to become a senior manager and Headteacher, the Future Leaders programme may be for you.
