Higher Level Teaching Assistant guidance notes
Guidance notes for those wishing to train to meet the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Standards.
This application form must be completed carefully and sent to the LA contact at least two weeks before the commencement of your training.
Prior to completing your application form, please ensure that you are familiar with the following documents:

- 'Meeting the standards- A guide to higher level teaching assistant training and assessment’

Training for HLTA status
The training for staff seeking Specialist Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status is open to all support staff currently working in Lambeth’s secondary schools
This application will initiate the process for your funding. You will be notified of the outcome as possible.
Training
Preparation For Specialist Mathematics or Science HLTA Standards
Candidates must have adult numeracy and literacy level 2, equivalent or higher. Please note that, funding cannot be agreed until evidence of these qualifications are sent with the application. We can accept copies, but the originals must be shown to the training provider at the first session.
Selection
Please note that selection depends on the candidate’s ability to verify that they are working at, or towards the HLTA Standards, the approval of the headteacher (special circumstances may be considered) and funding availability.
The LA may invite suitable candidates to join a waiting list if the training places for the current term are full.
Note for Headteachers
The TDA advises the following:
- A CRB enhanced check has been made on those applying for funding
- Schools have a clear and fair selection procedure in place, where there are several applicants.
